In this workshop, we will explore a number of basic physics principles that underlie the way living systems work. We’ll discuss the physics of fluids, and apply this to your circulatory system. We’ll discuss the concept of torque and use it to explore forces in your skeletal system. We’ll discuss the electromagnetic spectrum and explore how different animals see the world. Along the way, we’ll learn a number of surprising facts: Giraffes have blood pressure so high that it would certainly kill a human. When you curl a 10 pound weight, your muscles are actually pulling with a force of as much as 100 pounds. Bees and birds can see colors of light —and properties of light—that you can’t, and this gives them valuable information about the world.
Participants will receive a number of pieces of equipment for use in their own teaching, from full-size skeleton models to full-spectrum webcams.
This is a 3-hour workshop with the option to take 4 more 3-hour sessions over Zoom. Participants who complete the workshop and the 3 online sessions can receive 1 CSU graduate credit.
