New 2nd Saturdays at CSU Spur offer free, family fun

Beginning Saturday, Aug. 13, CSU Spur is launching “2nd Saturdays at CSU Spur” – while every day at Spur is free and open to the public, each 2nd Saturday of the month will offer extra programming and family-friendly fun for visitors. On 2nd Saturdays at Spur, educators, scientists, and partners share their most exciting hands-on activities – creating a fun and new experience for visitors every time.

Some of what you can expect during 2nd Saturdays at Spur:

  • Playtime in the Kid’s Mock Vet Clinic and Kid’s Kitchen.
  • Watch veterinarians perform surgeries on dogs and cats in the Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital – CSU Spur is the only location in the world where the public can see companion animals in surgery and ask questions directly to the vet team.
  • Try out virtual reality.
  • Get your hands dirty with digging activities while checking out the rooftop greenhouses and green roof.
  • See the horses who live on-site at CSU Spur assisting with therapy for humans through the Temple Grandin Equine Center.
  • CSU Spur has educational exhibits, as well as art installations to enjoy during a visit.
  • Local food trucks for those interested in buying lunch during their visit.

Second Saturdays are designed for families to interact with programs and partners of CSU Spur in a very hands-on way,” said Sarah Miley, Denver program associate for CSU Spur. “Visitors can talk with researchers, see Spur services in action, participate in demonstrations, engage with exhibits, and even get a sneak peek of future offerings coming to Spur.”

Examples of upcoming 2nd Saturday activities include soil exploration stations, healthy recipe demos, composting tip sessions, and more! We’re also excited to continue working with local small businesses like Tacos El Huequito Family Food Truck that will be on site Aug. 13.

“We have something for all ages – talk to the vets during animal surgeries, play in our mock clinic and mock kitchen, get to know the horses that live at Spur and work in equine-assisted services, experience virtual reality, and more! We’ll also have some of our newest spaces active, like our Terra Kitchen and plantings in our green roof,” said Kathryn Venzor, director of education for CSU Spur. “Every 2nd Saturday will feature new, hands-on activities, so we hope visitors will come back for more. We’re also very excited to continue to offer all of our programs and activities completely free and open to the public.”

The 2nd Saturdays at CSU Spur are also a great way for campus partners and community nonprofits to offer activities for public engagement, Miley said.

“We know so many partner organizations also have incredible expertise in the areas of food, water, and health and there are incredible opportunities when we work together to meet community needs, leverage resources, and make new connections – we hope you join us in bringing this community campus to life on 2nd Saturdays!”

CSU Spur is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 2nd Saturday of the month — 2nd Saturdays in 2022 are Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10 (Please note: CSU Spur is not open on Sundays or on Saturdays, except for the 2nd Saturday of each month).
