Name: Ruth Wilson
Role: Public Art Manager, Colorado Creative Industries
How are you connected to CSU Spur?
I manage the State of Colorado’s Public Art program, and since the buildings at CSU Spur received state funds, 1% of those state-funded construction costs were dedicated to commissioning artworks for the campus. I worked closely with members of CSU Spur’s staff and community members in the artwork selection process.
When did you get involved with Spur and why is it important to you?
Planning for the artwork selection process began in late 2019 and artists were selected in 2020. It was very exciting to facilitate the process to select artworks for this new campus in the heart of Denver.
What outcomes have you seen or do you expect from work at Spur?
Eight artists were selected to create artworks throughout CSU Spur’s campus. All artworks should be installed by the end of 2022. Four of the eight artists selected are local artists — it was super rewarding to grant these artwork opportunities to Colorado artists and to showcase their work to the CSU Spur community and its visitors.
What would you like others to know about Spur?
CSU Spur will create a sense of community and connectivity to the surrounding neighborhoods in a way that was not in place previously. I believe that the artworks will all contribute significantly to that mission!
